Three Ethiopians held over illegal entry into Tanzania

Tanga Regional Police Commander Mihayo Msikhela
Three Ethiopian nationals have been arrested for entering the country illegally and using tickets bearing Tanzanian names.

The aliens were travelling from Kilimanjaro Region to Dar es Salaam and were suspected to have been attempting to make their way into South Africa and further to Europe and America for greener pastures.

According to Tanga Regional Police Commander Mihayo Msikhela, the Ethiopian nationals were arrested on Friday at the Segera Police road block in Handeni District.

“They were travelling using Kilimanjaro Bus with registration numbers T.893 APD,” Mihayo said.

He said the illegal immigrants were arrested after police at the road block inspected the bus in collaboratuion with officers from Immigration Department. He named the aliens as Tariku Menche (180), Eddisse Tagesse (19) and Zewudc Shemebo (28). “After inspection of their tickets, they were discovered to have used Tanzanian names. Those tickets were issued in Moshi; this shows that they were being supported by unscrupulous Tanzanians,” the RPC said.

He encouraged Tanzanians to be patriotic and desist from engaging in illegal businesses, particularly facilitating human trafficking.
“This is against the country’s laws,” he warned.

The official said that the police force was alert and would work day and night to end the problem, which has grown in recent years.

The suspects will be taken to court on today to answer charges leveled against them, including entering Tanzania illegally.
