1950s-era drug for alcoholism shows promise in mesothelioma treatments

Copper-enhanced disulfiram, which has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat alcoholism in the 1950s, could help in mesothelioma treatments, according to a new study. The April 2014 study, titled PLOS ONE and published in April 2014 found that copper-enhanced disulfiram helped localize and stop the spreading of mesothelioma cancer cells.
According to the study, the drug triggers apoptosis, a process in which cells effectively commit suicide, but does so in a way that does not increase long-term toxicity in mesothelioma patients. Copper-enhanced disulfiram stopped mesothelioma cell growth in mice and promoted the effectiveness of certain types of chemotherapy, according to the study.
Mesothelioma is a deadly disease directly related to asbestos exposure, which often occurs while working in construction or industrial environments. Thousands of victims have filed mesothelioma lawsuits against companies that knowingly exposed them to asbestos while on the job.
